Historic moment for Montreat College as Karlie Gwyn and Kilia Hasty become first students to present at the Carolinas Psychology Conference on April 13.
Hosted by Campbell University, this renowned event offers students a platform to showcase research on critical psychological topics. Dr. Mark Hunter mentored both students throughout their academic journey.
"Dr. Hunter's own journey taught him resilience," shared Kilia. "He wants to provide the support he lacked, explaining complex concepts with patience."

Karlie's research examined campus security perceptions, inspired by real incidents affecting student safety. As an honors student in psychology and criminal justice, she surveyed peers about safety concerns and campus security responses.
"Students felt remarkably secure in Montreat's environment," she noted. "Faculty demonstrated deep understanding of student perspectives, prioritizing their wellbeing."
Kilia investigated connections between conscientiousness and academic resilience, applying Angela Duckworth's grit theory. Her study revealed moderate correlations between these traits among 25 participants, suggesting potential for stronger relationships with larger samples.
"Discipline shapes endurance," Kilia explained. "Daily commitment builds skills applicable across all life domains. Recognizing personal talents allows meaningful contribution."
Both students emphasized psychological growth beyond academics. Karlie sees her research as aligning with divine purpose, while Kilia pursues forensic psychology graduate studies and counseling career opportunities.
Upcoming plans include Karlie's June marriage and Chicago School's online M.A. Forensic Psychology program enrollment, alongside Kilia's graduate school applications and guidance counseling aspirations.
