Montreat College's 2026 Graduates Embrace Resilience and Purpose
David Mack 2026 Montreat College Commencement Celebrates Resilience, Purpose, and Faith
On May 10, 2026, Montreat College marked the end of its 109th academic year with a graduation ceremony attended by 187 students.
Graduates hailed from 21 U.S. states and six international locations, including Colombia, Japan, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, and Ukraine. The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) welcomed 119 graduates, while the Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS) program celebrated 68 alumni.
The event featured a video address from North Carolina Governor Josh Stein, who commended students for overcoming challenges posed by Hurricane Helene during the previous fall semester.
"Your presence here today signifies remarkable achievement despite recent difficulties," said Governor Stein. "As you encounter future hurdles, rely on your resilience and support others in their journeys. We all share responsibility to uplift those around us."
Rev. Gabriel Salguero, a respected Latino evangelical leader, inspired graduates to use their education to positively impact the world through compassionate action.
"Embrace your role as change-makers," Rev. Salguero encouraged. "Equip yourselves with grace to conquer life's obstacles and contribute meaningfully to society."
Yessenia Castellanos, a dual-degree Business Administration and Visual Communication graduate, reflected on her athletic and academic accomplishments. Staci Williams, an AGS valedictorian and devoted mother, shared how her studies in psychology shaped her career path after decades in healthcare.
"Montreat College transformed my perspective," Williams noted. "Discovering my purpose empowered me to transcend limitations."
Retiring professor Dr. Dorothea "Dottie" Shuman concluded with Jeremiah 29:11-13, emphasizing divine guidance for the class's future endeavors.
Established in 1916, Montreat College remains dedicated to fostering intellectual growth, spiritual development, and global impact through its Christ-centered liberal arts curriculum. With over 13,000 alumni, the institution continues shaping leaders prepared to serve society with integrity and vision.
