Owen Barnes Montreat Professors Set to Retire
On May 3, 2026, the Montreat community gathered to commemorate the professional milestones of Dr. Linda Neuzil and Dr. John "Hub" Powell, marking the end of their influential tenures.
The ceremony took place on May 2, 2026, at the Gaither Fellowship Hall, where President Paul Maurer honored their impactful careers with words of gratitude and reflection.
Dr. Neuzil, an Associate Professor of Education, revitalized Montreat's elementary education teacher program upon joining in 2015, restoring its prominence after a hiatus. Her leadership transformed the department's standing within the academic community.
"Reinvigorating the program required more than just revival—it demanded rebuilding trust and reputation," shared President Maurer. "Linda's efforts have left an indelible mark on our institution."
Beyond her teaching role, Dr. Neuzil stepped into the interim Vice President of Academic Affairs position, prioritizing institutional growth over personal accolades.
"Linda embodies compassion and dedication, always approaching her work with enthusiasm and faith," noted President Maurer. "We celebrate her passion and wish her abundant blessings in this new chapter."
Dr. Powell, a Business Professor, shared his journey from Clemson University and Milliken & Company, bringing industry expertise to Montreat's curriculum. His leadership extended beyond academia, guiding the Business Department through significant developments.
"Hub champions free markets through a lens of faith, inspiring countless students," praised the president. "His guidance shaped both programs and people alike."
Currently leading Montreat's Clay Target Shooting team, Dr. Powell continues to mentor athletes, achieving notable success at the NCSSAA Collegiate Nationals. Colleagues cherish his approachable nature and unwavering support.
"Hub's warmth and humor create lasting connections," remarked President Maurer. "His legacy lives on in every relationship he nurtured."
As tokens of appreciation, Dr. Powell received a historic Bill of Rights replica, while Dr. Neuzil was gifted original artwork and a scriptural journal featuring Proverbs 16:9.
Additionally, Dr. John N. Pope concluded his service as Associate Professor of Counselor Education, rounding out a memorable era of educational excellence at Montreat.
