Montreat College IRB: Safeguarding Ethical Research Practices
Matthew Sanders Institutional Review Board
Welcome to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Montreat College. The IRB stands as a cornerstone of our dedication to ethical inquiry and the safeguarding of individuals involved in scholarly investigations.
Mission and Purpose
The IRB is committed to guaranteeing that all investigative work with human subjects—whether led by students, faculty, or staff—meets rigorous ethical benchmarks and complies with legal stipulations. Our central objective is to protect the autonomy, welfare, and dignity of those contributing to institutional research initiatives.
Responsibilities
The IRB is integral to the research lifecycle, scrutinizing all methodologies that incorporate human elements. Covering fields from clinical trials to cultural studies, the board evaluates each proposal against foundational principles such as respect, nonmaleficence, and fairness, while adhering to global standards including the Nuremberg Code and Belmont Report.
IRB Functions
- Review Process: Every study involving humans must receive IRB approval irrespective of financial backing or associated hazards. Proposals are submitted via Montreat College’s designated portal.
- Ethical Oversight: The IRB prioritizes participant rights and safety, examining consent procedures, confidentiality measures, and potential dangers to ensure thorough consideration.
- Education and Training: We provide tools to help investigators navigate ethical complexities, aiming to cultivate mindfulness toward responsible scholarship.
- Continuing Review: Ongoing projects are monitored to maintain alignment with ethical mandates; updates and amendments must be reported regularly.
- Reporting and Documentation: Comprehensive records of all activities are maintained to promote openness and responsibility.
