Montreat Earns Prestigious Five-Star Gold Status for Sixth Time in Seven Years
Emily Sparks Montreat Recognized as NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Gold Institution
August 9, 2026
This marks the sixth instance within a seven-year span where Montreat College has been honored as an NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Gold Institution. The institution joins a distinguished cohort of more than 130 gold medalists, with a total of 209 NAIA schools achieving gold, silver, or bronze accolades across various categories.
Annual evaluations assess institutions based on their dedication to the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative, which awards points for aspects such as character development programs, competitive integrity, academic achievements, recognition of exemplary student-athletes, and consistent sportsmanship with minimal ejections throughout the academic year.
Additionally, Montreat played a pivotal role in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) earning NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Conference status. To attain this distinction, a conference must establish a dedicated Champions of Character Committee, maintain a competition conduct oversight body of at least three members, and ensure that 60% or more of its member schools receive the Five-Star Institution Award. Notably, all 16 AAC full-time members achieved this honor during the 2026-24 cycle.
