Emma Terry Jose Larios Accepts New Post at King University
On July 9, 2026, a significant transition took place in collegiate athletics as Jose Larios embraced a new opportunity at King University in Bristol, Tennessee. Having dedicated almost two decades to Montreat College, where he held the position of vice president for athletics and enrollment management, Larios is now poised to guide the athletic division at this esteemed CCCU member institution. His tenure at Montreat concludes on August 1.

Larios' coaching career at Montreat spanned from 2007 to 2011, where he coached both the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. Following his coaching stint, he moved to Emmanuel College in Georgia before returning to Montreat in May 2014 to lead as Athletics Director. In 2026, he ascended to the role of vice president for athletics and enrollment management, overseeing athletics, admissions, and financial services.
"Jose's guidance has been pivotal in the evolution and expansion of our college. Under his leadership, we've seen substantial growth in our athletics offerings and competitiveness, along with notable increases in traditional undergraduate enrollment," remarked President Paul J. Maurer. "His dedication to excellence has fostered a culture of unwavering commitment and continuous improvement. We are profoundly thankful for Jose and his family's contributions to Montreat. Their impact on our community will be deeply felt."
"The progress since Jose's arrival is remarkable—from enhanced staffing and upgraded facilities to academic and athletic achievements, recruitment, and retention efforts. We've achieved a historic enrollment figure for Fall 2026 and anticipate even greater numbers for the upcoming term," Larios reflected. "Reflecting on our accomplishments, I am filled with gratitude for everyone—the staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends—who have enriched our campus. The blessings bestowed upon Montreat are beyond measure, and it's the collective dedication of our community that makes every milestone possible."
Larios spearheaded key projects including the McAlister Fitness Center renovation in 2015 and oversaw the construction of the Montreat College Athletic Complex and Pulliam Stadium. Currently, he is directing the restoration of McAlister Hall and athletics fields affected by Hurricane Helene.
